Master of the Mass mountain bike race coming to Snowmass

ASPEN, Colo.—Competitors can now sign up for the inaugural Master of the Mass bike race, a new a four-stage, three-day mountain biking race in Snowmass,  July 13-15, 2012.

Gold Pass helps athletes with gold medal performances

It made its debut during last week’s National Ski Areas Association convention and trade show in San Antonio, Texas. And now, the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association’s Gold Pass is ready to be introduced to a larger audience- winter resorts across the nation during the 2012/13 season.

X Games to return to Aspen in 2013, thanks to two-year extension

ASPEN, Colo.—Aspen will host the ESPN Winter X Games for a 12th straight year, Jan. 24-27, 2013, the sports network announced today.

X Games jumps get second life as surface for race training

ASPEN, Colo.—The huge jumps that were used for boardercross during ESPN Winter X Games 2012 are being repurposed this week in order to provide a venue for up-and-coming alpine racers with Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club.

USA Pro Cycling Challenge unveils Aspen poster contest winner

ASPEN, Colo.—The official poster for the Aspen stage of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge was unveiled today and will be printed as Aspen’s official 2012 USA Pro Challenge poster. One of 12 host cities, Aspen is the only town to host both a finish and a start, August 22 and 23, including the “Queen Stage.” Highlands Ranch, Colo. resident and cycling enthusiast Callie Hegstrom created the winning design, tapping into her enthusiasm for the sport.

During this unusual ski season, there’s been a lot to like. You read me right- when the snow totals are down, you can have fun-o-plenty on groomers, mellow bump runs, in NASTAR courses and especially off the slopes in some of these still-cool little towns that populate Ski Country USA.

Aspen Highlands to close early

ASPEN, Colo.—In the end, it all came down to something totally out of Aspen Skiing Co.’s control - the whims of Mother Nature. That’s behind their decision to shutter Aspen Highlands one week early, the same day that Aspen Mountain and Snowmass will close for the season.

Pro Cycling Challenge releases course details; race includes a start and finish in Aspen

DENVER, Colo.—The USA Pro Cycling Challenge announced the course details for the 2012 event, taking place Aug. 20-26 in Colorado. This year’s race will take the riders to an altitude of 12,000 feet three separate times and will include a finish on iconic Flagstaff Mountain on the penultimate day.

ASPEN, Colo.—It was a very déjà vu kind of day over at Aspen Highlands as the Bob Beattie Reunion Cup set up camp on lower Thunderbowl on Saturday, and delighted the crowd of over 600 people with the dual-slalom, head-to-head racing that was the signature of the World Pro Skiing tour that Beattie created.

ASPEN, Colo.—Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club Adaptive athletes racked up several medals at the U.S. Adaptive National Championships and Nor-Am races this past Tuesday and Wednesday, March 27-28.

ASPEN, Colo.—Ski racers going head-to-head in a dual format course, flying over big jumps, cruising through the finish line, with the audience cheering them on all the way. An announcer offering play by play action; rock and roll jamming in the background and beautiful women as a requisite part of the scenery.

Sigh. Seasons like this don’t come often enough. Lindsey Vonn’s crazy-sweet World Cup run for 2011-2012 was like Vail’s snow season for 2010-2011. It was as good as the real world gets, and we’re sad to see it go.

AVSC J4s podium at Steamboat Championships

Anna Patterson of Aspen races the super-G at Steamboat. Fine finishes in  the slalom events earned Anna an invitation to next week's J4 Can-Am  race in Maine. Also representing Aspen at the Marriott Jr. Championships  were Dexter Edelman, who earned three top-10 finishes, including a  bronze in slalom, Jack Bowers and Madison Osberger-Low.

Brooms of Fury sweeps Aspen Curling Championship

ASPEN, Colo.— The Snowmass Village-based team “Brooms of Fury” won the Aspen City Curling Championship March 15 at the Aspen Ice Garden. Local interest has been going strong since 2006, according to Dave Ritter, past president of the 16-team curling league.

Aspen Skiing Company will host more than 30 events this spring, many free and open to the public. The schedule of on-mountain competitions, concerts and parties include the final Hi-Fi Concert of the season and a Buttermilk closing day party.
