DENVER - A last-ditch effort by Colorado's governor to give gay couples in the state rights similar to married couples failed Monday after Republicans rejected the proposal during a special legislative session.

PITKIN COUNTY, Colo.—Big chunks of public national forest lands in Eagle and Pitkin counties are one step closer to gaining permanent roadless protection, as the U.S. Forest Service this week announced the latest version of state-based rule that would ban road-building and other industrial activities on about 4.2 million acres across Colorado.

FRISCO, Colo.—A slew of wilderness proposals for lands in Summit and Eagle counties that have been stuck in a gridlocked U.S. House of Representatives could get a bit of traction in the Senate, where Mark Udall says he will introduce a wilderness bill once he's taken input from local communities and other stakeholders.

DENVER, Colo.—A new report compiled by the Democratic minority membership of the House Natural Resources Committee suggests that the oil and gas drilling industry has run amok, primarily due to spotty enforcement of health and safety regulations. Committee Democrats said the Department of Interior must reform its oversight of drilling on public lands.
