Decline in visitors hurt snow sport retail sales

ASPEN, Colo.—It was a difficult winter for most snow sports-related businesses in the U.S. Lift ticket sales at the nation’s ski areas were off by at least 15 percent, even though Aspen/Snowmass seems to have dodged the bullet with a mere 1.8 decline.

SNOWMASS, Colo.—Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. announced two key hires today to the senior leadership team at the new Westin Snowmass Resort. Hospitality industry veterans Tim Johnson and Scott Cochran join the Westin Snowmass Resort as the new Director of Sales and Marketing and the Director of Food and Beverage, respectively.

Vail Resorts reports 8.9 percent decline in Colorado skier visits

BROOMFIELD, Colo.—With a scratchy 2011-2012 snow season behind it, Vail Resorts is reporting a 12.6 percent decline in skier visits for its six Colorado and California properties. However, season-to-date lift ticket revenue is down just .3 percent, reflecting new pricing structures.

ASPEN, Colo.—There’s a school of thought emerging in the ski industry that the wacky 2011/12 season was an aberration, a rare time-out from a normal year which shorted virtually every region of the country on snowfall.

ASPEN, Colo.—Now starting a spring break for cleaning and minor renovations, the Hotel Jerome is looking to summer’s end for its first major remodel in 27 years. The plan is to give a fresh look to Aspen’s 94-room “silver queen” while at the same time respecting the Jerome’s rightful place in history.

Westin by the numbers: $55 million upgrade, 400 construction workers, Nov. 15 deadline

Construction traffic this summer will use Elbert Lane and a section of Fanny Hill. Crews will attempt to minimize impacts to neighboring businesses and also the crowds that flock to Snowmass Village for the Thursday Night Concert Series.
SNOWMASS VILLAGE, Colo.—The $55 million reconstruction of the Silvertree hotel, Wildwood Lodge and Snowmass Conference Center is officially underway, with the clock ticking on a marathon construction project with a firm Nov. 15 deadline.
